Camping With Kids: The Real Stuff Nobody Puts on the Packing List
There's already a gear list for camping with kids on this site, and it's a good one. This isn't that post. This is the stuff that doesn't fit on a checklist, the parts of camping with our kids that actually stick with us after the trip is over.
Packing the car is half the trip for them
We used to do all the packing ourselves and just load the kids in at the end. At some point that changed, mostly by accident. One of them wanted to carry something to the car, then both of them did, and now packing the car is its own event before the trip even starts. It takes longer. It is not more efficient. It is, somehow, one of their favorite parts.

Handing a kid a real job, carrying the folded chairs, holding the tent bag, helping stack firewood under supervision, did more for how excited they were about the trip than any toy we packed ever has. It also means the car gets loaded slightly wrong and slightly slower, and we've decided that's a fair trade.

Letting them be bored, on purpose
We packed toys for the first few trips and mostly watched them sit unopened in a bag. What actually holds a kid's attention at a campsite is dirt, sticks, the fire, and whatever bugs are nearby, not the entertainment we spent time packing. The best thing we've done is stop trying to prevent boredom and just let a slow afternoon be slow. It's usually when the best, weirdest conversations happen.
The parts that are still genuinely hard
We're not going to pretend every trip is easy with kids. Someone's tired at the wrong time, someone doesn't want to use the pit toilet, someone's overtired and picky about the one dinner we brought. None of that goes away because you've camped a hundred times before. What's changed for us isn't that it gets easier. It's that we've gotten faster at handling the hard fifteen minutes and getting back to the good part.
Why we keep doing it
None of this is really about the gear, even though we write a lot about gear on this site. It's about a kid writing "I love camping" on a toy tablet without being asked to, or a five-year-old insisting on carrying the firewood herself. Those are the moments that don't show up on a packing list, and they're the actual reason we keep going back.
